An espresso is a coffee speciality that is often described as a concentrated coffee. This is because the taste of espresso is strong and is characterised by a full aroma. This popular hot drink originates from Milan and was created around 1900. You can drink espresso straight, i.e. in the traditional way, or use it as a basis for other coffee specialities, for example:
- Latte macchiato: significantly higher milk content than cappuccino
- Cappuccino: composed of an espresso with warm milk and milk foam
- Espresso Doppio: Espresso double
- Espresso Macchiato: with a dash of milk
- Americano: topped up with water
Espresso can be used in many ways and is an important ingredient in some coffee specialities.
Coffee and espresso beans come from the same plant. Due to the longer roasting process, espresso beans already differ from coffee beans, in terms of colour, and they are also darker and slightly shiny. For a classic espresso, the beans are finely ground, then hot water is pressed through the finely ground coffee under high pressure, for example in a portafilter machine.
